Agent Greg Clifton says he was fired last week by David Wells’ wife because the left-hander wants to squeeze him out of his commission for his last contract. The Phillies were hot after Wells, but Clifton said he expects him to re-sign with San Diego. Wells, 41, had surgery on his knee last week.
It doesn’t look as if the Phillies will re-sign lefty Eric Milton, who allowed 43 homers last season, or land No. 1 choice Derek Lowe. The Yankees have reportedly offered Milton a three-year $18 million deal. Milton is among the Tribe’s top three choices among free-agent starters.
