Unprecedented Behind The Scenes Access To Two Bands That Suck

One band is despicable, the other merely loathesome. Can an entertaining, evocative documentary be made about bands that are monumentally untalented? Perhaps. But Ondi Timoner’s”Dig” is far more interesting if you’ve never previously encountered someone who is totally attention starved.

(Gallant, Goofus in happier days)

One of the doc’s slower thinkers describes the Brian Jonestown Massacre as “the Velvet Underground of the ’90’s”. Well, yeah, they wear sunglasses really often.

Those aren’t the Gallagher brothers ripping off George Harrison’s cowboy look on the back of Rubber Soul? On a related note, I just realized that I think the Oasis’ single is good because it is “Street Fighting Man”

  2. CSTB says:

I’m sorry, Oasis having a new single that anyone admits to having heard is way more shocking than Lenny Harris still playing.

  3. Jim says:

Not to encourage violence, but the only thought I had while watching this movie was why doesn’t someone just slug him(Anton that is)or something else to knock him on his ass?

  4. CSTB says:

that’s a good question. I can only assume it is because they are so dazzled by his resemblance to David Berman.

My other fave lafftastic moment in the film is when the BJM’s ex A&R dude annoints Anton with some kind of scene godfather status, because without Newcombe we wouldn’t have the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Warlocks or the Beachwood Sparks. So there you have it. Anton Newcombe, the Randy Odin of his generation.

have heard many good anton stories. he once flew into a screaming rage when a listener casually told him that his new album “sounds like the 60s.” also, anton picked a fight with same person on another occasion, he took him up on the offer, and anton then ran around the club and hid behind the bouncer. ALSO, he decorates his house with lp sleeves–stones, who, VU, etc, and of course his own too. ALSO ALSO ALSO, many/most (?) on-stage fights supposedly pre-planned. wutta guy.

  6. Jim says:

and re: anton’s comments distancing himself from the film. guess who released a “best of” album and went on an extensive tour following the movie’s success? guess who had his picture in spin magazine attending a sxsw party for ‘dig’?

  7. Skip Lockwood says:

Hey, Things like new Oasis singles find me the same way the fact that Lenny Harris is still playing finds you. We all have our crosses to bear. Think Piazza is seeking him out for tips on surviving the “pinch hitter years” (aka the “Ed Kranepool/Danny Heep/Minnie Minoso etc etc years)”?

  8. CSTB says:

I’ll take Danny Heap’s track record (baseball and musical) over the Gallaghers.
