Now that Boston’s radio situation is sorted, will the Red Sox radio team be changing? The usually-on-to-something David Scott of Scott’s Shots seems to think so.
It™s just about time to start wondering if Joe Castiglione and Jerry Trupiano (above) will be moving with the Sox from WEEI to WRKO. It is believed both gentlemans™ contracts expire at the end of this season (the end of the original WEEI deal) and there has been some scuttlebutt that one, or perhaps both, voices might not be retained.
There was little or no mention of the duo during the reporting of the new deal, likely because it™s ASSUMED, they both be sliding down the dial.
While the end of Castiglione™s tenure in Boston is very doubtful (he owns the franchise™s signature call and a whole lot of other history), the future for 13-year Boston voice, œTroop is a bit less certain and there are some who believe the Waaaaaay Back Man could be a casualty of the new contract arrangement with Entercom and some long-ago agreements between one or more of the ownership group and a former broadcaster friend.
Texas’ Hank Blalock (double, HR, two RBI) was having a nice night against Boston’s Matt Clement before the rain kicked in ; Trupiano noted that Carlos Pena is hitting .192 at Columbus. I know that sounds a little out of context, but when the audience can’t hear enough about the Yankees’ lack of depth, there’s always a time and place for such factoids.
Mike Piazza was 4 for 5 in San Diego’s 10-5 dispatch of the Cubs today at Wrigley, a Padres victory that saw starter Woody Williams leave early with a leg injury suffered while baserunning in the 2nd. Chicago’s Angel Guzman and Glendon Rusch (1-5) combined to allow 8 runs before the game was five innings old. Dave Roberts and Michael Barrett exchanged words (above) after the Padres outfielder stole 3rd in the 5th inning. I don’t claim to be an expert in baseball ettiquette, but apparently stealing with a 5 run lead that late in the game has broken an unwritten code of some sort.
Kerry Wood started for the Cubs’ PCL Iowa affiliate tonight, and has allowed one run on 5 hits (two walks, 3 K’s) over 5 innings, with Colorado Springs holding a 1-0 advantage.
Houston’s Phil Garner has indicated that he’ll be using the tandem of Chad Qualls and Dan Wheeler to close games in place of Brad Lidge for the forseeable future ; Lidge has blown 3 out his 14 save chances, having allowed runs in his last 7 appearances. The Rockies’ Jason Jennings has held the Astros to 4 hits thus far in 6 innings, and Houston and Colorado are tied at one.
