Full credit to Mets manager Terry Collins, who lasted an entire two months in charge of a glorified Buffalo Bisons roster before finally losing his composure publicly after last night’s 9-3 loss to Pittsburgh. Even if you’d told Collins he’d be at this point in the season denied the services of David Wright, Jose Reyes and Ike Davis (don’t forget, no greater a baseball/fitness expert than Fred Wilpon has pronounced Carlos Beltran at operating at something less than his full powers), it is very doubtful he’d have envisioned the opposition collecting more infield hits in one inning than his club collects in a month. Nor could Collins have anticipated a night in which he’d be cite the Pirates as a sterling example of how to play the game “the right way”.
