While the Clippers could once count on Donald Sterling’s miserly ways to condemn the team to yet-another lottery bid, in more recent months, it’s been some ghastly bad luck for Staples’ other team. Following the sickening knee injury suffered by Shawn Livingston last season, the Clippers have lost Elton Brand for a minimum of two months (though more likely, much longer) after the forward ruptured his left Achilles tendon during workouts on Friday.

Much the way ClipperBlog’s Kevin Aronovitz deems his club “as presently constituted, a 25-30 win team”, the LA Times’ Christine Daniels shows little optimism for said “luckless franchise.”

Taking a cue from their arena rivals, the Clips reacted to the downcast news the same way the Lakers do. They signed a point guard. Some people eat ice cream or lasagna or some other form of comfort food when they are depressed. The Lakers collect point guards. Derek Fisher, Javaris Crittenton, Coby Karl — the Lakers have gained a lot of weight this summer. Today, the Clips tried to drown their sorrows by signing former Cavaliers-Hawks-Grizzlies-Suns-Wizards-Bucks-Bobcats point guard Brevin Knight to a reported two-year, $4-million contract.

The Clips will be the eighth team in 10 NBA seasons for the 31-year-old Knight, whose career, remarkably, has yet to be called for traveling.
