Gerard,
“So do you think “A River Ain’t Too Much to Love” is the best work you’ve done? Wait, you mean you’re not the Bill Callahan behind the band Smog?”
This guy must be paid by the word – I haven’t read anything so bloated since, well my last posting. Maybe in his next column, he’ll note the similarities between Kim Birdie and Kim Gordon’s name.
Jim
Thanks, Jim. Always nice to know that what I do here at CSTB can be so succinctly described as “stupid indie references laced into ‘sports commentary'”. I hope you don’t mind if I use that quote for our rate card.
And by all means, as soon as I hear of anyone stealing your gig, I’ll be sure to return the favor.
Bill Simmons dropped a Franz Ferdinand reference in one of his recent columns. Are they stupid and indie enough that Simmons can also be seen as stealing your gig? Seriously though, I haven’t seen you make that many indie rock references, but I do remember that time Mark Ibold wrote in and that guy played in Free Kitten. That’s pretty damn indie.
Simmons is certainly stupid enough, but I can gratuitiously out-indie him any day of the week. Just ask Jim Hoffman.
Indeed, recognition from Mark Ibold is the kind of thing that Bob Cook and Bill Simmons can only lay awake at night and dream of, but when they start getting correspondence from Binky Phillips, that’s when they’ll know they have truly arrived.
You haven’t been reading long enough, Paul. Every couple days I have to ask Carrie “Have you ever heard of _____?” I don’t know how she puts up with it.
I probably should have said “obscure and inane rock” references vice just “indie”… really, you should cherish and protect your niche–it’s almost as good as running the merch table at Burma shows.
hey, those 8X10 glossies of Peter Prescott aren’t gonna sell themselves.
