Having a knee-jerk, negative reaction to the use of a beloved song in a car advertisement is only natural, particuarly if you are under the age of 12. In the case of a song I associate with little else than Al Franken’s annoying testimonials for the acclaimed album that shares its name, Steve Earle’s “The Revolution Starts Now” seems to be a perfectly appropriate rallying cry for Chevrolet’s newest truck commercials. Steve has undoubtedly spent a night or two sleeping in a Chevy, and the smell is nothing if not revolting.
I’m no hipster, and you can call me wrong, but if I ever hear the local Double-A team play “Wonderful Subdivision” or “Drug Problem” over the PA between innings, I’m walking right out of that place. I won’t let my fondest childhood memories be abused in that way.
