Like many other conservative, middle-American guys, I was confronted this week with a contemporary male athlete who stood in great contrast to the stereotypical image our sporting heroes are supposed to represent.

From his effeminate mannerisms to his garish costumes to his bold public statements, it’s very clear, even to someone who knows next to nothing about his field, this is a very different sort of icon.

While the old school might’ve mocked or shunned this gentleman, he’s been all over “SportsCenter” the past several days, treated like a credible athlete, despite many openly wondering if what he does can really be called a sport.

But enough about Tony Stewart. Shame that Johnny Weir couldn’t have won a medal, huh?
