…and while Tom Kipp’s presentation sounded pretty interesting, staying home and watching the above clip from Ä’bn-ÅŒzn 20 or 30 times was probably just as awesome. And think of all the money I saved on plane tickets and lodging.

With you on the plane ticket part but this is always why I stay with a friend who lives in the city to avoid the hotel costs. Helps that he’s not far from the venue! Thanks for the link (and the video)!
Knowing how much inspiration, effort and execution Tom Kipp applies to each year’s presentation (previous years’ topics have included a “critical karaoke” of Flipper’s “Sex Bomb,” and various delicious scraps of his research into the furthest rudiments of sludge rock), I am sorry to say that my attendance remained only a temptation for the same reasons (Ebn/ozn all weekend!). Maybe I’m holding out for the miracle of Richard Meltzer and Nick Tosches returning to the throne to blow these other fatties out of the water, but I admit I’m actively scanning the newswires to see who got called a racist this year and why.
What? You couldn’t bunk with Pig Champion?
wait, that went from a normal 1980s punk reference into something else.

None of that this time around to my knowledge; then again the biggest controversy I heard of involved complaints over academic speak and obfuscating meaning. I think.
And yes, Tom Kipp’s presentation was indeed a major highlight, and very affecting. I wish I had been able to catch all of it.
too soon, Don Smith. Too soon!

Trust me, I considered the necrophilia angle and discovered that no matter how intense my excitement (you’d be amazed, JD Constantine remains unusually spry), I stuck with the strict observance of the “AEIOU sometimes Y” marathon. Should circumstance find me in the neighborhood in a future year’s pop conference, I’ll pitch the CSTB editors on a “live blogging” event.
