Well, that takes a bit of the shine off UConn’s 64-50 win over South Florida. While the Hartford Courant‘s Christopher Keating cites Calhoun’s tormentor, freelance journalist Ken Krayeske as a bit of a provocateur (and at least one Connecticut scribe has described Krayeske in terms far less flattering), the coach raised an excellent point, though perhaps unintentionally.
“Quite frankly, we bring in $12 million to the university, nothing to do with state funds,” Calhoun shouted. “We make $12 million a year for this university.”
If Calhoun’s hoops program is profitable to the tune of $12 million profit annually, he’s hardly being overpaid. A.J. Price, however, is being seriously fucked over.
Arguing about coach’s salary right now is so old, even in an economic crisis. It common understanding that they bring money into the university. Krayeske’s blog is nothing more than a slew of harangues attacking anybody with a remotely bent toward Israel (Not that I am one to support their shelling of Gaza that went beyond reaction to Hamas) and really nothing but a member of the Green Party who took advantage of the blog boom, though nobody can comment on his blog.
What does Krayeske want Calhoun to do exactly? He signed a deal. If Krayeske really wanted to expose anything about Calhoun he could have looked into the favors he gives to parents/AAU coaches of his players that is rampant across college basketball, one of the biggest loopholes that defies ethics. This guy makes Wally Matthews look studious in his complaints about the Mets and CitiGroup. A contract is a contract.
