Incredibly, just minutes after denying Peter Forsberg from point-blank range in what had to be one of the saves of the season, the Rangers’ Kevin Weekes (above) was beaten by the 2nd fastest goal in NHL overtime history, Simon Gagne’s daring game winner just 6 seconds into the extra session.
For Gagne, this was his league leading 28th goal. For Larry Brooks, this was an opportunity to compare the NY netminder to Kaz Matsui.
Philly’s Kim Johnassen — acquired in the Eric Lindros deal, Jesper reminds us — went end to end, weaving through Dominic Moore and Fedor Tyutin in scoring the Flyers’ 2nd goal during period 2. The Flyers scored 3 power play goals in regulation last night (the third essentially being an own goal by Michal Rozsival), this after going 2 for 35 on the power play after the begining of their current road trip.
A ridiculous pass from Jaromir Jagr set up Martin Straka’s 3rd period goal to tie the game at 3.
One of MSG’s unfortunate theme bars — this one displaying some incredibly fake bits of rock concert memorabilia, sported a particularly suspicious Smashing Pumpkins ’96 tour poster that proclaimed in not-so-small letters “FEATURING KEYBOARDIST JONATHAN MELVOIN”.
It’s one thing to go to the effort to make such a poster years after the event itself, but to throw that little tidbit in there is the sort of attention to detail sorely lacking in almost everything else this organization does.
