How do you improve 39 spots in the Amateur Draft? By remaining unsigned and playing for peanuts with the indie Fort Worth Cats. And throw in some client-stealing allegations by feuding agents for good measure. P Luke Hochevar failed to come to terms with the Dodgers after being selected as the 40th overal pick a year ago, but was taken at no. 1 a few hours ago in this year’s draft by the Kansas City Royals.
Some other early highlights :
2) RHP Gregory Reynolds (Stanford) – Colorado
3) 3B Evan Longoria (Long Beach State) – Tampa Bay (and he’s already signed)
4) RHP Brad Lincoln (Univ. Of Houston) – Pittsburgh
5) RHP Brandon Morrow (Cal Berkeley) – Seattle
6) LHP Andrew Miller (North Carolina) – Detroit
7) LHP Clayton Kershaw (Highland Park High, TX) – Los Angeles Dodgers
8) CF Drew Stubbs (University Of Texas) – Cincinnati (Stubbs has told MLB.com Radio that he’s already made a deal with the Reds)
9) 3B William Rowell (Bishop Eustace Prepatory) – Baltimore
10) RHP Tim Linecum (Univ. Of Washington) – San Francisco
21) RHP Ian Kennedy (Southern California – New York Yankees
27) RHP Jason Place (Wren High School, SC) – Boston
28) RHP Daniel Bard (North Carolina) – Boston
29) RHP Kyle McCulloch (Univ. Of Texas) – Chicago White Sox
62 RHP Kevin Mulvey (Villanova) – New York Mets
232 LHP Chris Cody (Manhattan) – Los Angeles Dodgers
If I were KC, I’d play hard-ball with Luke Hochevar and not fork over the ridiculous amount that Boras will probably try and get. Unless Hochevar wants to sit out another year, he’ll either drop Boras or accept an offer similar to what the Dodgers offered him. That, sports fans, is how you deal with Scott Boras.
This Phillies use their #18 pick to draft Doug Drabeks son Kyle. We are all getting a lot of laughs from young Drabeks MySpace page:
