Tuesday morning, the Houston Chronicle’s Richard Justice tipped the Astros to make a run at Jeff Suppan, though keep in mind, this was hours before the Jason Jennings trade was consumated. However, Justice did manage to cram the following Bob Gibson tale into his blog entry.
Seems that some guy had bunted for the first hit of the game against Gibson. Doing that violated one of baseball’s unwritten rules that the first hit has to be legitimate. Next time the guy comes up, Gibson nails him. The poor guy is down at homeplate. The catcher and umpire are checking to see if he’s alive.
Gibson walks slowly from the mound, looks down at the guy and says: ”Bunt that one.”
