Gawker — my 3rd or 4th favorite Nick Denton property, depending on whether or not anyone is checking to see if I’ve looked at Fleshbot recently — is reporting there’s been a massive cull at VH1 Classics today.
It was just a few hours ago that I struggled to explain to a friend that Kix’s Steve Whiteman (above) was Hagerstown’s answer to Jackie Rogers Jr. , and without the influence of VH1 Classics (amongst other things) I doubt said conversation would’ve taken place.
Maura Johnston, always thinking of practical matters, suggests Eddie Trunk “might soon start hitting Mike Piazza up for money,” though I would personally recommend Sir Trunk for the job of Chief Curator at Seattle’s Experience Music Project.
What I learned from watching VH-1 Classic’s “The Alternative”:
The Jam/The Style Council/Paul Weller was/were the greatest act(s) of the last thirty years, if you base that on the amount of airplay received on that show. The Sisters of Mercy were a close second.
on behalf of everyone who wants to support Jack Rabid’s candidacy as the next head of programming, surely there’s a 24-hour New Model Army marathon in the offing?
Don’t get me started about Kix and Hammerjacks. My Name Is Earl essentially defines Western Maryland, so I’ll let that do the talking.
VH1 Classics broadcasts some great programming, particularly BBC Crown Jewels which finds sporadic live performances hitherto only available from video trading. Obscurities like Thin Lizy on OGWT or the Police on Rock Goes to College or the Faces on The Saturday Show (I think).
