(the most ridiculous all-around talent of the moment, seconds before being mauled to death by a man in a furry suit)
I can’t quarrel with Pete Carroll’s decision to go for it on 4th and 2 with 2:09 left — ‘SC’s offensive line had done a terrific job for LenDale White most of the evening, and there’s no way the Trojans wanted to give the ball back to Vince Young (31/40, 269 yards passing, 199 yards and 3 TD’s rushing). Had Texas needed to move the ball another 30 yards on that final drive, USC might still have relinquished the title.
I can’t remember who grabbed Quan Crosby’s facemask, but he shouldn’t feel too bad. At least he’s not Gary Cismesia.
(UPDATE : I’ve been told by a reliable source that not only has Deadspin run a nearly identical photograph, but the caption is pretty close, too. In the spirit of misplaced civic pride, I’ll overlook this unfortunate coincidence. Bruce Springsteen survived making the covers of Time, Newsweek and Smegma Journal the same week, and chances are Vince Young will live this one down, too.)
ATX officially has Dirty South props. We hogs in this game.
another half yard by White with 2:09 and all the cars honking on so. congress would be a lot quieter.
but hey, would this USC team have beaten the ’95 Nebraska squad? Let’s just keep asking that until next September.
in all seriousness, Texas beat Ohio State in week 2 and defeated the supposed greatest-of-all-time Trojans in what was essentially a home game for Southern Cal. ATX = Title Town. Enjoy it.

or if the zebras had noted that young’s knee was down before he pitched that td i’m sure it would’ve been different too.
woulda/couldas aside that was probably the most enjoyable football game i’ve watched in recent memory. dynamite individual performances, big players making big plays in the biggest game of their lives, last second scoring drives… that was a great f’ing game.
I think the honking downtown has finally stopped.
There’s something to be said about living in the middle of the zoo on a night like last night. Had I been an alumnus of UT and actually really cared who won I’m not sure what my reaction would have been. Considering I was one of the first people over the boards at Lynah Rink in 2000 when Cornell swept Harvard out of the ECAC playoffs — I can only guess I would have hurt more than my liver celebrating.
As a life long Horns fan I couldn’t be happier right now. Contrary to Leinart’s statement at the end of the game, the better team won. And I agree with Pete Carroll’s decision to go for it on 4th down, but how do you leave your Heisman Tropy winner on the sideline on the most important play of your entire season? Shouldn’t you at least put the fear in the other team that you might give him the ball? Or maybe, you actually give him the ball?
they did have a heisman trophy winner handle the ball on that play. he handed off to the running back WITHOUT the heisman trophy. this came as no surprise to anyone who watched the n.e. pats in the immediate post-parcells years.
i’m sure pete went with the guy who was “pumped and jacked”.
I think too much is being made of Mumbles Matt as a bad loser. His tone struck me as more bummed out, defensive than genuinely disrespectful.
and yeah, it is strange that Bush wasn’t in the backfield on 4th and 2. Maybe Carroll was afraid Reggie would throw another lateral.
Too bad the Heisman presentation isn’t this week. The committee would only have to furnish 1 ticket to NYC.
