The Yankees’ search for answers in center field has led them to 20 year old Melky Cabrera (above), called up to The Show after just 9 games with AAA Columbus (.325 BA, 3 HR’s, 11 RBI’s, .425 OBP). Previously, Cabrera had performed capably for the Eastern League’s Trenton Thunder (.267, 9 HR’s, 44 RBI’s in 75 games).
That New York are willing to entrust CF to an unproven youngster would be unthinkable under usual circumstances, but anyone who has observed Bernie Williams and Tony Womack’s recent adventures in the outfield can’t be too surprised.
