On the heels of a 2-14 season, San Francisco has fired coach Dennis Erickson. Hired two years ago as a suprise choice to replace Steve Mariucci, Erickson was a combined 9-23 in two seasons for S.F., and his NFL record stands at 40-56 over 6 years with the 49’ers and Seahawks. It would be nice to think the former Miami Hurricanes/Oregon State coach will have a long wait before another NFL club considers him for another top job, just as it’s hopeful that former Raiders coach Art Shell will be interviewed by the 49’ers.

Erickson has three years and $7.5 million remaining on the 5 year contract he signed in 2003.

The 49’ers entered the 2004 season with almost $30 million in salary cap obligations from old contracts, drastically limiting their payroll. On the bright side, however, players and team staff receive healthy discounts on Monster audio cables.

UPDATE : Looks like Terry Donohue will be paying retail for his Monster cables. SF fired their GM today as well, despite the former UCLA coach having 4 years left on his deal.
