And he wasn’t even talking about the lousy bacon cheeseburger at Champions! ESPN.com’s Jeff Pearlman penned a profile of hair-product enthusiast Quin Snyder, currently coaching the D-League’s Austin Toros, and garnered the following anonymous quote concerning the vibe at the Austin Convention Center.
“Being here sucks,” says one. “I mean, sucks — s-u-c-k-s. They treat us like s—, pay us like s—, the fans don’t come, the referees are terrible and half the guys don’t even care about winning. It’s very hard to stay motivated.”
Even worse, I bet it must be very hard to breathe inside that suit.
The Toros take on Idaho tonight at 7pm in the first game of a best-of-three series to determine the 2008 D-League championship. I don’t know if this might qualify as the first professional sports title in Austin history (presumably, roller derby doesn’t count), but I look forward to future scenes of Darvin Ham hanging out with Lance Armstrong in the warehouse district.
You would think the occasional Air Traffic Controllers show would be enough to offset those negatives.
That’s exactly what I was thinking, Andrew. In fact, the only thing stopping the Spurs from moving the franchise to Austin is the way ATC have been blackballed by the local rock circuit.
It would be a fitting coda to the Ice Bats season if the Toros won a championship.
