Wary of keeping a moody former superstar who barely managed to play in 100 games the past two seasons, the White Sox cut 1B/DH Frank Thomas loose this autumn. Recognizing that Thomas’ 12 HR’s in something like 11 AB’s last season might indicate he’s not totally washed up, the bargain hunting Oakland A’s have signed the often Hurting Big Hurt to a one-year deal.
If the middle of the Oakland batting order features Thomas, Eric Chavez and Milton Bradley for an entire season, they might set some new team records. Like, for instance, the most combined strikeouts by any A’s trio in history.
I have to argue with you on that one. Reggie Jackson, Bert Campaneris, and Gene Tenace did their fair share of striking out. I don’t think the Hurt, Milton, and Eric Chavez combination are going to rival that.
you’re right, N. I don’t think Frank’s gonna get enough at bats.
The 1968 Oakland A’s had Reggie Jackson (171 strikeouts), Rick Monday (143), and Sal Bando (78), for a total of 392 strikeouts (on a team with 1022). I don’t know that is the team record, it was just Jackson’s top year for strikeouts. Career highs for Thomas (115), Chavez (129) and Bradley (123) don’t come close.
So you’re saying you don’t think Thomas, Chavez and Bradley are capable of having career years, then.
