ESPN News is reporting that former Michigan football coach / A.D. Bo Schembechler died today after collapsing during a television taping at WXYZ-TV.
Schembechler held a 194-48-5 mark at Ann Arbor, along with 13 Big Ten titles and 10 Rose Bowl appearances. His 5-4-1 record against Ohio State from ’69-78 includes a 24-12 win in 1969 that ended the Buckeyes’ 22 game winning streak, setting the stage for a resulting rivalry with OSU and Woody Hayes that was amongst the sport’s most hotly contested.
All of a sudden, these guys might wanna consider a name change. Or at least a brief hiatus.
(More on the above, from the Detroit Free Press and WXYZ).
From the band’s MySpace page…
The band is crushed to learn of the death of Bo Schembechler. We named this band after Coach Schembechler to honor him as the face of Wolverine football. We have never wished ill will upon him in any way and have always wished him the best. When we learned that Bo had seen our web site and was amused by it we were delighted. We were simply delighted. He said to those with him as he read it, “See, I still matter in Columbus!” That may have been the greatest understatement in football history. We believe that he took the band’s name as the compliment that it was meant as and that he was flattered by it. We wish to extend our deepest and most heartfelt sympathies to his family. We are truly sorry for their loss.
classy guys. Besides, good luck getting a gig in Columbus if you’re named Woody Hayes’ Cock.
You know, when Steinbrenner dies, I’m not gonna wuss out and say “I really loved him all along.” Terrible job, band that gets way too much attention.
They have also decided that being the Dead Schembechlers isn’t as amusing when he’s dead. They are changing their name and donating the profits from tonight’s show to charity,
Scott “Freddy Hitler” Ian would be ashamed.
