hmmm. interesting correspondence. I guess there’s a thin line between funny-as-fuck social satire and really inconveniencing people, abusing their trust, etc. I’m not sure you crossed the line, however.
So I’m a little torn. I think the Craigster has done our modern lives a ton of good, but surely he must recognize that CL is an institution. A well-meaning, efficient instituion, but one just the same. If the social contract between CL and its users is gonna be regularly torn to shreds, ANARCHY-style, that would kinda suck. But that doesn’t take away from the fact that said faux advert is an absolute classic of its type.
There’s something to be said for making people say “hey, is this for real?” every now and then. I mean no disrespect to the persons who work so hard to keep CL a utopian thang, but at the end of the day, Utopia’s just a shit band that Todd Rundgren was in.
If cupcakes were involved, clearly no harm was done.
I think I justified it at the time with: if somebody wants to profit from somebody’s anger (getting items that didn’t belong to the person, etc) then they can be yanked a bit. Certainly it’s a little flimsy though. It was indeed April Fool’s Day as well.
I do like Craig and his list, I think he probably has to deal with a lot of jerks.
Here’s an email exchange between me and Craig himself, it’s something else:

Also, I’m having a party! Please come:
