If nothing else, here’s an alternative to the Steve Alford rumors, though one that’s already been denied. From the Atlanta Journal Constitution’s Sekou Smith.

Hawks coach Mike Woodson might find his name circulating through the cyber rumor mill as well. His alma mater, Indiana, could be in the market for a new coach soon with current coach Mike Davis currently under fire from Hoosiers fans and the media.

Woodson’s name was mentioned as a candidate for the job when Davis replaced Bob Knight six years ago. Knight was Woosdon’s coach during All-America career at IU and has long been one of his coaching mentors.

Were Davis to be fired before the end of the season, Woodson would be high on the list of candidates to replace him, as would another IU alum, Iowa coach Steve Alford. But Woodson’s got a job and is under contract for two more seasons.

“I’m trying to turn this program around, the Hawks are my priority,” Woodson said. “I didn’t make a one- or two-year commitment. I made a four-year commitment to help turn this team into a playoff outfit. And that’s where all my energy is focused right now.”

I do kinda like how he refers to the Atlanta job as “this program”, but we shouldn’t make too much of it, given the success of the football and baseball programs (though the wrestling program got the death penalty).
