Inter Milan has decided to go ahead with its preseason tour of England after initially canceling the trip over fears of terrorist attacks.
”The team will go to uphold the agreement made with the English organizers,” Inter president Giacinto Facchetti said in a statement posted on Inter’s Web site Sunday.
Inter had canceled the trip on Saturday in response to two waves of attacks on subway trains and buses in central London. The first, on July 7, killed 52 people. There were no fatalities in the second on Thursday.
The decision prompted criticism from British authorities, including London mayor Ken Livingstone. Two scheduled opponents — Crystal Palace and Leicester City — threatened to sue.
”They just wanted that bit of reassurance that everything was OK. We’ve given them that,” Britain’s sports minister Richard Caborn told Sky TV on Sunday.
Inter’s tour includes four preseason games, one of them in south London against Palace. The others are at Leicester, Norwich and Portsmouth, well away from the capital.
