You think there’s a chance this guy might make the Mets’ playoff roster?
Granted, it was just Houston and a mere five inning stint, but watching Lance Berkman and Carlos Lee flailing away at Martinez’ pitches (and observing another longball by Mr. Pissy Hands clobbered off Roy Oswalt) was awfully encouraging.
With all due respect to the Padres’ trio of Peavy, Young and Maddux, you’ve got to feel confident about the Mets hitting the postseason with a rotation of Glavine, El Duque, Pedro and some combination of Maine and Perez. I’d feel even more confident if Guillermo Mota was relegated to mop-up duty and/or hit with another drug suspension, but there’s still 3 weeks to go.
Ladies and gentleman, Kevin Mulvey is the hottest ringer in the PCL. In futher Lil’ Wilpons playoff notes, catcher Ramon Castro could accomplish the rare feat of playing in postseason series at 3 different levels in the same season. A rehab stint that included New Orleans’ first round wins over Nashville continued today with Castro hitting 3rd for the Brooklyn Cyclones in their NY-Penn League playoff against Staten Island.
In the event the Cubs manage to overtake Milwaukee again over the next 3 weeks, I don’t think I’m going out on a limb in suggesting Steve Traschel doesn’t get a playoff start.
I saw Paul Lo Dookie rehabbing in Brooklyn a couple of weeks ago and I went to the final game vs. Lowell the other night. As of last week, there was still hope that Pedro might make an appearance at Keyspan Park and that my tickets might be worth hundreds of dollars but alas, it was not meant to be. Seen the Cyc’s a few times this year and they have a couple of keepers, though their middle infield has horrible defense. A kid Lucas Duda would seem like an obvious choice to move to AA next year, from what I’ve seen. Good left-handed power hitter.
Heilman on Saturday… yes it was the Astros but when was the last time he struck out the side instead of blowing the lead. And then pretty decent work on Sunday. If Elias doesn’t have stats for walk-on music, maybe someone has the date he switched from London Calling to Seven Nation Army.
Duda hit one last night against the SI Yanks that thwacked the batter’s eye over centerfield. Would’ve gone at least 410 feet. Ringer, erm…I mean the rehabbing Ramon Castro got on base a couple of times.
There were around 2,000 in SI last night for that. Not too good for a playoff.
duff turnouts for minor league playoff games aren’t super uncommon. I’m sure the ‘Clones will do better tonight, but even teams that do well in the regular season struggle to get the word out if they’re lucky enough to continue play in September.
The last game I was at, which was the last game of the season, set a new attendance record. They did announce the playoff game but, yeah, I can see why attention would shift back towards MLB in the fall.
last night’s first round clincher at Brooklyn did about 3000, far less than the ‘Clones draw in the summer.
There were about 200 after the second fog delay. I learned that night that hipsters are pretty durn clever hecklers.
