As heard on WFAN earlier today :
Ed Coleman : David Newhan will be starting in left field…
Joe Benigno : DAVID NEWHAN??!?!??
EC : Marlon Anderson’s in center, and Shawn Green in right…
JB: WHAAAAT? Nooooooooooo (begins making moaning noises)…why David Newhan??
Ed Coleman : …well…..
JB: WHY ISN’T LASTINGS MILLEDGE PLAYING? WHY???!!!!! (begins crying)
EC: (trying to change the subject) Hey, Kerry Wood just walked by with Eddie Vedder.
JB : (mood changing) EDDIE VEDDER????? EDDIE VEDDER FROM PEARL JAM????????
EC : Yeah, they just walked right by.
JB : (disconsolate) ….but David Newhan….geez….
If this wasn’t the day’s radio highlight, it came a close 2nd to one later in the afternoon when Ron Santo asked Vedder if he’d been touring a lot lately. Santo gets a bit of grief in this space, but never let it be said he’s not the interviewing equal of Dave Kendall.
Newhan, by the way, made a nice running catch to rob Ryan Theriot of extra bases in the last of the 8th with the Cubs and Mets tied at 2. And no, I don’t think Moises Alou would’ve had it.
On Wednesday Kaspar and Brenly said that Eddie Vedder makes them feel the way Ron Santo makes Vedder feel.
Ed Ved was ever humble in the face of crazy praise, saying that P.J. were just “one of 150 bands” on this weekend’s lollapalooza. OK, then, let’s have Iggy in the booth, next time.
