As you’ve probably figured out by now, yesterday’s item about the consumation of the Tim Hudson for Edwin Jackson and Antonio Perez trade was much like James Dolan in the sack ; premature. My apologies to you, the readership (and Mrs. Dolan).

From Joe Strauss in today’s St. Louis Post-Dispatch :
An anticipated deal sending Hudson to the Dodgers hit a snag Sunday, permitting the Cardinals to take another – and perhaps final – shot at landing a righthanded starter able to fill their need for a staff anchor. Club sources indicated that a trade could be made for Hudson independent of the Edgar Renteria negotiations.

The Cardinals have discussed a package including pitchers Jeff Suppan, Rick Ankiel and Kiko Calero, a source confirmed Sunday, but the A’s prefer Jason Marquis, Dan Haren or Ankiel, and catching prospect Daric Barton.

Suppan, the team’s leading winner with 16 last season before also claiming two playoff decisions, is due to earn $5 million next season, which would almost offset Hudson’s $6 million salary. The A’s have also had extensive negotiations with the Baltimore Orioles about Hudson and Zito.
