“If the players want to play games in the press, I’ll play games in the press. And it won’t be pretty.” (audio, 97.1 The Ticket)

Presumably, Detroit’s chain-smoking, thoroughbred racing enthusiast/manager was in a brighter mood after tonight’s game against Seattle, in which the visitors’ Carlos Silva was chased (4 IP, 9 hits, 7 earned runs) and designate mop-up man Cha Seung Baek allowed home runs to Magglio Ordonez, Edgar Renteria and Curtis Granderson.

Bugs & Cranks’ Ed Valentine described the Yankees’ 12-2 humiliation at the hands of the Orioles as “just plain disgusting”. WCBS’ Suzyn Waldman wasn’t nearly as coherent, claiming “if you weren’t watching with your own eyes, you’d think it was ‘The Bad News Bears’. Or “Major League’.”

I’ve never quite figured out how to watch a ballgame with someone else’s eyes, but then again, I’ve also not mastered the art of using my eyes to watch a game I’m listening to on the radio.

Rockies prospect Ian Stewart has a 14 game hitting streak on the line tonight in the Sky Sox’ PCL contest with Sacramento. If Stewart extends the streak to 15, he’ll have set a minor league record for former members of the Chiswick Records roster.
