I’m not sure which is the most surprising element of the below item from the Melbourne Herald’s Grantley Benard — that former Manchester United bust/recent QPR trialist Mark Bosnich is still playing football or that I can actually find so many pictures of him that don’t feature Sophie Anderton in the same shot.
Out of football for more than five years after a drugs scandal, the former Aston Villa, Manchester United and Chelsea goalkeeper has signed a seven-game deal with the Mariners as cover for first-choice keeper Danny Vukovic. With Vukovic starting his five-game suspension from last season’s A-League grand final after Saturday’s game against Sydney FC, it is expected Bosnich will stand between the posts for the Mariners against Queensland Roar on August 31.
It is possible Bosnich, banned for nine months after testing positive to cocaine in 2002, will face Melbourne Victory at Bluetongue Stadium on September 20.
It will be Melbourne’s first visit to Gosford since its 5-2 demolition of the Mariners on New Year’s Eve.
Invited to trial with the Mariners, Bosnich kept a clean sheet and saved a penalty during a 3-0 pre-season cup win against Sydney FC.
