P Victor Zambrano signed a one year, $2.1 deal with the Mets yesterday and is said to be fully recovered from the ankle injury that ended his 2004 campaign after just 3 appearances in a NY uniform. And since the Mets are no longer employing the doctors who said Zambrano was in wonderful shape prior to his acquisition from Tampa Bay, that might actually be true.
There’s was another big Mets signing on Monday, perhaps not a monumental as that of Carlos Beltran, but an important one just the same. Following some contentious negotiations, New York came to terms with the no. 3 overall pick from the 2004 amateur draft, Philip Humber. The right hander was 35-8 for Rice in his college career, going 13-4 in 2004 with a 2.77 ERA and 154 strikeouts in 115 innings.
