There were yucks aplenty on Michael Kay’s ESPN1050 show yesterday afternoon, during which ABC’s Jeff Van Gundy claimed colleague Mike Breen (above) had “walked into a door” prior to Game One of the NBA Finals (pic swiped from Awful Announcing).
“I would never….” intoned Kay, “be seen wearing a band-aid on my face in public. Never.”
Van Gundy chuckled nervously, but there was no stopping the host.
“There’s no amount of money. I don’t how bad the injury is. Something could be falling off. I just won’t do it.”
That Band-Aid is the least of ABC’s problems. I actually changed the goddamned channel due to boredom during the 3rd quarter. It’s sad that Pat O’Brien’s work for CBS back in the day makes me nostalgic. ABC and the NBA pulled hard for this Finals (judging by the gross amounts of ESPNC repeats of old Celtics-Lakers games) and they show up with the most boring possible announcers. I appreciate the occasional Jeff Van Gundy freakouts more than he could possibly imagine (I weep, actually, whenever he finds it in his heart to chime in) but I can do without the rest.
Cue Game 3 crowd footage of Dyan Cannon, Jack Nicholson, The Sports Guy……zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
