No. 1 regional seed Texas will have to win 3 games in little more than 24 hours if they hope to move to next weekend’s Super Regionals, following a 3-1 defeat to UC Irvine tonight in Round Rock. The Longhorns had staff ace Adrian Alaniz on the mound (he of a 2005 no-hitter) but the Texas junior came out on the short end of a duel with Scott Goergen (complete game, 2K’s, 5 hits). Texas will take on Wake Forest —- the Demon Deacons eliminated Brown with a 4-2 win this afternoon to end the latter’s first ever NCAA tournament appearance — tomorrow at noon, with the winner continuing to face UC Irvine in the nightcap. If the Anteaters lose their first game of the weekend tomorrow night, both of Sunday evening’s foes will return to the Dell Diamond on Monday afternoon.
Rutgers eliminated Lafayette earlier today in the Charlottesville regional, with an 11-10 result that featured 5 lead changes, 31 total hits and sadly for all, Bernard McGuirk throwing out the ceremonial first pitch.
