San Diego’s April 21 tilt against Los Angeles has been dubbed Ken Caminiti Night by the Padres, as they plan to salute the late third-baseman on what would’ve been his forty-first birthday.

At least one radio goon/webmaster has said that paying tribute to Caminiti is tantamount to glorifying his steroid use. I’d prefer to think that the Padres are smart enough to know that people have qualities that make them memorable beloved, etc., that aren’t wiped out because of their mistakes. Other than their ability to hit the baseball and stay in the lineup, of course.

Given that Caminiti’s death was anything but glamorous — or went unreported — it would take some doing to make his drug use look cool.
