Mike Pelfrey’s first 6 weeks of the 2007 season were mostly ugly ; 8 first run innings allowed in 6 starts (0-5, 6.53 ERA), 17 walks in 30.1 innings, the latest struggle taking place in yesterday’s 12-3 loss to Milwaukee (though to be fair to Pelfrey, the roof really caved in on Joe Smith and Scott Schoenweiss). As such, Pelfrey’s been optioned to New Orleans and OF Chris Gomez (above, .286, 2 HR, 26 RBI’s, 17 steals in the PCL) has been promoted. Moises Alou appeared to have pulled a quad during Saturday’s capitulation to Milwaukee, so it’s likely Gomez will see some action this week.
With Pelfrey’s demotion, it’s anyone’s guess who will be starting Thursday afternoon’s matinee against the Cubs. WFAN’s Ed Coleman is skeptical that El Duque will be available, raising the Jose Lima-esque spectre of Chan Ho Park taking the mound.
Sticklers for detail will note Willie Randolph told the Daily News’ Peter Botte that Pelfrey would remain in the Mets rotation regardless of yesterday’s result.
I saw Ryan Zimmerman’s game winning grand salami off our old pal Jorge Julio last night, and was particularly impressed with MASN’s efforts to return the camera to the same banner-wielding female fan. And I suspect that’s because she was the only paying customer remaining at RFK after a 9th inning rain delay.
While Chuck James was terrific last night for the first place Braves, there is a small bit of solace for Mets fans this morning, with the news that Chipper Jones has impregnated another Hooter’s waitress suffered thumb injuries that should render him indisposed for a few days.
