Of Leon Powe’s 21 points-in-14-minutes against the Lakers Sunday night, ESPN’s Tony Kornheiser exclaimed, “who heard of him, other than Edgar Allan Poe?”
If indeed, Kornheiser was saving that line all day, he might be interested to know that Powe scored 20 or more points in a game four times during the regular season, and the forward collected a double-double on five occasions. Granted, yesterday would qualify as a breakout performance —- scoring 21 on the Lakers in the Finals is slightly different from lighting up the Nets in the last game of the season. But it’s not as though Powe was an unhearalded player in college, either. Who’d ever heard of him? I dunno, basketball fans?
In his shitty column in the Star this morning, Whitlock referred to Powe as “unskilled” which is true only if one considers neither scoring nor rebounding to be skills.
Eh, give Tony a break. It’s part of his image. I’ll bet he knew a bit about Powe before the game and was just doing acting uninformed as he is prone to do. Makes for some entertaining TV on occasion.
