In case you were wondering, the reason so many people dislike Scoop Jackson’s inane offerings at ESPN.com has little to do with SJ’s cartoony persona, and has everything to do with their not getting his incredibly obscure cultural references. (link courtesy True Hoop)
(if Scoop mentions them one more time, they’ll cancel the reunion tour, promise)
As someone who finds the Scoopster’s name dropping no more or less comical/educational than Bill Simmons’ “Entourage” references, I am now open to the possibility that both writers might not really exist, and are in fact, very high concept gags. That more have fallen for the Sports Putz is neither sinister nor unexpected, but I do think a serviceable HBO or Showtime series loosely based on both (casting suggestions, please!) would be preferable to another year of reading either.
Reading Bill Simmons is preferable to watching that bozo on tv. He must have some pretty small testicles to make his voice that high and everything he says seems rehearsed.
That’s because everything he says he has been writing for the last seven years.
It’s cool that Scoop draws inspiration from Grey’s Anatomy and Lupe Fiasco. I had always thought his writing was uniquely and totally uninspired, but I now know different.
I mean, “Critical Beatdown” is a good record…
….but drawing sports writing inspiration from an MC whose lyrics include “Hello…how are you doing” and “your whole crew is ice cream, fudge” doesn’t seem like the right direction to go in.
