Imagine for a second what they outcry might be if Amar’e Stoudemire were to publicly proclaim last week earthquake and tsunami in Japan some sort of karmic payback? Or if Carmelo Anthony opined that God had in for the Japanese? There’s slightly less angst over the past weekend’s twitter comments (since removed) by New York Liberty G Cappie Pondexter (above), currently toiling in Russia for UMMC Ekaterinburg, who mused, “what if God was tired of the way they treated their own people in there own country! Idk guys he makes no mistakes.”
Pondexter has since apologized (“I didn’t realize that my words could be interpreted in the manner which they were”) and the Liberty’s public statement on the matter is equally unimpressive (“she made a mistake and quickly apologized for that mistake…we will have no further comment.”) Apparently, David Stern and James Dolan don’t consider slurs against the Japanese to be a very big deal, provided they come from someone most of you have never heard of.
She probably blew her shot at becoming the AFLAC duck too.
