As Houston’s MLS franchise drags its feet on announcing their 4th name, Biz Journals.com reports the MetroStars might undergo a reincarnation of their own.
Red Bull GmbH, makers of the famous energy drink, is looking to bring Major League Soccer’s MetroStars franchise into its fold, according to a report in the New York Daily News.
The MetroStars are currently owned by Los Angeles’ Anschutz Entertainment Group and play in Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.
The Austria-based Red Bull owns the Red Bull Salzburg soccer club in the Austrian First Division. When Red Bull bought the club in April 2005, it renamed the team, which had be called SV Wüstenrot Salzburg, in a rebranding effort.
The report said a similar renaming/rebranding would take place if the company buys the MetroStars.
Such a pairing makes perfect sense. Consumed on an empty stomach, Red Bull can induce the same sort of projectile vomitting as listening to one of NY/NJ GM Alexi Lalas’ CD’s.
Just to let the New Owners of the Metrostars know that we will be boycotting the new team and the new stadium unless a new name with NJ in it Is used. This using NY in HJ has gone too far and wont be tollerated any longer.
I will b boycotting them unless they REMOVE th Ny completely from their name and USE NJ. NY isn’t putting any tax dollars into giving them a stadium, while we are giving them $85 million to build the stadium. If they want to have NY on their name – let them go to NY and find a stadium there. Just ask the “NY” Jets what happened when they tried that though. 🙂

Its not about one state or the other. NY refers to the region, and is a more accurate moniker for a team playing in Bergen or Hudson counties than NJ. The NJ moniker doesn’t do much for the Nets or Devils, does it?
If the Giants and Jets can go by NY, then so should the soccer team!
