The Associated Press is reporting the passing of longtime New York Yankees / NY football Giants public address announcer Bob Sheppard, just two months shy of Sheppard’s 100th birthday. For decades, Sheppard’s voice was inextricably tied to the NYC sporting experience, and while he’s best eulogized by a Yankee fan, I can say for certain that he looms very large in my memories of visits to the old Yankee and Giants Stadiums. For a perspective on Sheppard you’ll probably not find in any of the New York papers this morning, I recommend Jeff Johnson of Fitted Sweats’ attempts at engaging Sheppard — laid up with a bad hip at the time — from April of 2006.
