August 8, 1976 : for just one afternoon, Pete Vukovich’s hardcore fans are treated to the sight of the White Sox pitcher and his teammates donning shorts for the first game of a twinbill against the Royals.
Between games, ChiSox management realized this bold initiative was taking place decades before the launch of Paul Lukas’ Uniwatch, and decided to call the whole thing off.
Actually, it was 1976 (and Fisk wasn’t on the Sox ’til 1981). But among the players whose bare legs gave small children nightmares for weeks — Goose Gossage, Jerry Hairston Jr.’s dad, Wilbur Wood and Terry “Fat Tub of Goo” Forster. I hope nobody slid that day.
Bob,
I regret the error. p.s. I am wearing shorts right now.
