In a development that can best be described as mildly surprising given his infrequent use since returning from the disabled list, Red Sox right-hander Keith Foulke will not pitch again this season, according to a report on the team’s flagship station, WEEI-850 AM.
A Red Sox spokesman said he could not confirm the report as of early Thursday afternoon. Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein, who was with the team during its recently completed three-game series at Tampa Bay, was in the process of flying back to Boston.
As Mike Timlin continues allowing inherited runners to score at a pace that would embarrass John Franco, Craig Hansen might be playing a crucial role in the season’s final 9 games.
I was surprised the Sox didn’t call up Hansen before Sept 1 to have him eligible for the postseason – but now that Foulke is “injured” and doesn’t need to “look forward” to the end of the season anymore, Hansen could be placed on the postseason roster too, right?
