The Star-Ledger’s Lisa Kennelly reports a tale that while quite sickening on the surface, is not nearly as distasteful as the Mets having once invited Garth Brooks to spring training.

The actor and infamous Yankees fan Billy Crystal will sign a one-day contract with the Yankees this week.

Crystal, who turns 60 on Friday, will work out with the team on Wednesday and play in the game against the Pirates on Thursday. He will wear No. 60.

“I’ve been waiting 50 years for this call,” Crystal said in a statement. “I’m overwhelmed by the generosity of the Yankees and Commissioner Selig. I know this’ll be tougher than the Broadway Softball League, but I’m looking forward to helping the younger players…which, by the way, is all of them. Oops, I have to go, Scott Boras is on the phone.”

In all seriousness, this is one of the perks of being a celebrity superfan and I in no way begrudge Crystal or the Yankees this indulgence. In fact, I’m very hopeful Foxboro’s football team is taking notice and will soon invite Bill Simmons to return punts during the preseason.
