The New York Post’s George King reports the Yankees have approached former Cubs/Red Sox SS Nomar Garciaparra about playing first base.
Three years ago the odds of Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez and Nomar Garciaparra together in the Yankees’ infield were as long as a Beatles reunion.
While GM Brian Cashman and agent Arn Tellem refused to confirm or deny an offer has been made by the Yankees to Garciaparra, several industry sources indicated an offer has been made.
While there are risks ” learning a new position in the big leagues is difficult and Jason Giambi is a better hitter when he plays the field ” signing Garciaparra would give George Steinbrenner a star-studded infield.
With apologies to the Meatmen’s “One Down, Three To Go”, a Beatles reunion was a slightly more unlikely proposition. But I see no reason why Yankee fans should worry about Nomar at first base. Anyone can learn the position, just ask Mike Piazza.
I saw this on a plane to LA last night and have apparently missed some baseball news — but if the Yanks are interested, how is it the Cubs can’t convince Nomar to do the same for them? Stories I saw suggested that Nomar refused to play other positions and was leaving over the issue. I’m wondering if that was ever really his feelings or the Cubs know more about his health than they are letting on and don’t care about losing a 300 hitter with their current line-up.
