The sun broke through Monday as if ordered by the city’s chamber of commerce. The snazzy new scoreboard displayed colors sharper than real life.
The sellout crowd was ready to erupt in the eighth inning. Closer Brian Fuentes jogged in to the intimidating riff of, um, Village People’s “YMCA.”
Everyone agrees that the Rockies must maximize their home-field advantage in order to contend. Getting the soundtrack right wouldn’t hurt, admitted Fuentes, the club’s lone all-star last season.
“Oh, I heard it. I was waiting for my song to come on, then crickets. It was disappointing,” Fuentes said before Wednesday’s game. “There’s definitely a big difference when you come in and it’s ‘YMCA’ instead of my song being played loud. That gets the adrenaline going and the crowd into it.”
I’ve always thought that (once you skip past the Jamaican stuff) the beginning of Ice Cube’s Wicked would make perfect intro music for a closer. One, Two, Three… etc. As far as I know, nobody uses it.
