Following in the considerable footsteps of Sammy Sosa and Lenny Dykstra (I’m not making this up), Tigers CF and WWE enthusiast Curtis Granderson is being flown to England, Holland and Italy to serve as MLB’s latest goodwill ambassador. From the Detroit Free Press’ John Paul Morosi.
Granderson is single, with no children to care for in the off-season, which gives him a chance pursue the overseas opportunity. In fact, the 25-year-old still lives with his folks during the off-season — something he openly admits — although he is starting a meticulous house hunt that might conclude sometime next year.
Granderson, who lives modestly despite his $335,000 salary this year (and a pending six-figure World Series share), looked at it a little differently: He’s just happy for the chance to see Europe for the first time in his life.
“And,” he pointed out, while speaking from his parents’ house in suburban Chicago a few days ago, “I don’t have to pay for it.”
Great news for fans of the New York Mets and haters of “God Bless America” ; Carlos Delgado has decided to decline his contractual right to force a trade.
I can verify that Mr GC did not make up the item about Lenny Dykstra being sent to Europe by MLB. For whatever reason, MLB decided to send Nails to France, a country regarded as one with a low tolerance towards boorish Americans. Speaking of baseball ambassorships, I wonder how Vietnamese baseball is progressing after Danny Graves ummm “clinic”.
