Congratulations to Peter Karamanos on the Hartford Whalers winning their first Stanley Cup with tonight’s 3-1, Game 7 victory over Edmonton. To those who said Hartford wasn’t a big league city, who’s laughing now?
Walter O’Malley, Bob Irsay and Art Modell all send their best wishes.
Karmanos is a worthless sack of fuck, but at least Chuck Kaiton got to call a Stanley Cup series. And a winning one @ that. With a long time Bruin playing defense, to boot.
PS – Guess who just found out the “long-time” Bruin hasn’t been a Bruin for a long time?
PPS – Guess who also still thinks Steve Sommers boy-toy Pat Verbeek is skating into someone somewhere?
(The answer to both PSes – Gerry Cheevers.)
Poor Little Ball of Hate. It’s not Verbeek’s fault that he played in an era when defenseman could clear out the front of the net using any means necessary.
I’m just glad that Ray Whitney was able to finally add something to his resume beyond childhood Oilers stickboy. Sure, it may have been screaming “Fuckin’ right!” on national TV, but it’s a better anecdote.
The game didn’t do much for me, but this is a nice reminder of what a little masterpiece of late-70s graphic design the Whalers’ logo is. There’s a lot going on there, and I like pretty much all of it.
“The game didn’t do much for me”? Did you skip the first two periods?
The Game’s last CD didn’t do much for me.
I should say “the sport.” It’s the only one I don’t really watch. Bad syntax = miscommunication. But I meant everything I said about that logo.
I grew up with the Whalers and saw them a bunch at the Hartford Civic Center, but after college, I forgot that they even existed. I thought that they had moved to Tampa Bay or something. The internet really can teach us new things
D’oh Should have read the link I guess…
That Whalers logo is pretty sweet. The New Haven Nighthawks logo was cool , too.
The Stanley Cup, the greatest trophy in all of sports was just paraded down Hillsborough St in Raleigh, NC! As Ric Flair says, “WOOOOOOO!”
The Stanley Cup belongs in Hartford not Raliegh! Its taken the ‘Canes what 6… 7 yrs to finally win. They had and still have an enormous fan base in Ct. What the hell does the Carolinas know about hockey! Jack thats what. Was an amazing game though, go Whalers!!!
As much as I wish NHL hockey was still here in Hartford (we do have the Wolfpack, after all), I realize that it just can’t work right now.
Too many people I know have come here from warmer climates and have *no* idea what the sport is all about. Will they watch a game or buy a ticket? No. We’d be off just as well with a Blitzball team.
Dallas has the right idea… they have initiated a bunch of youth hockey programs. The kids learn the sport, the parents learn the sport, they become fans. Fans buy tickets, merchandise, and watch games.
GET OVER IT WHALERS FANS! They are NOT the Whalers anymore, they are the Carolina Hurricanes! They did JACK in Hartford. Meanwhile, CAROLINA made the Stanley Cup Finals in 2002 and 2006. 2 appearences in 4 years. NEVER saw that in Hartford. Pay attention to the AHL Whalers fans, THEY ARE NO LONGER EXISTENT! Hockey is now in CAROLINA! GET OVER IT!!!
