No one asked. Even fewer wondered. But here’s CSTB’s list of 2004’s most exceptional sound recordings.
Richard Buckner – Dents & Shells (Merge)
The Muffs – Really Really Happy (Five Foot Two)
Rilo Kiley – More Adventurous (Brute Beaute)
Wilco – A Ghost Is Born (Nonesuch)
Styrofoam – Nothing’s Lost (Morr Music)
MF Doom – MM…Food (Rhymesayers)
Television – Live At The Old Waldorf (Rhino)
Blood Bros. – Crimes (v2)
Sonic Youth – Sonic Nurse (Geffen)
I Love You But I’ve Chosen Darkness – s/t (Emperor Jones)
Fennesz – Venice (Touch)
Tom Scharpling & Jon Wurster – New Hope For The Ape Eared (Stereolaffs)
Please note that titles associated with any of CSTB’s business interests were ineligible. If you’d like to submit your own list via our comments section, please, feel free to do so. Unless you were planning on including the Stills album, in which case you can fuck off.
RTX, Transmaniacon (Drag City)
that’s all I got.
live sound board tape of theo epsteins coverband live at copperfields best version of pearl jams black i ever heard
Michael – we’ve already promised Mark Kates that we’ll not be making fun of Theo’s band. Of course, if the Sox fail to defend the AL pennant, the gloves come off.
The best albums of 2004, including those associated with any of CSTB’s business interests, are Joel RL Phelps and the Downer Trio’s _Customs_ and _Tradition_.
I may have heard five records released this year, including zero on CSTB’s list.
Do you think my pick would have been different if I had other records to compare it to instead of just the Fedorov Brothers?
I don’t think so.

tight year for record buying for me, hence the short list:
vee dee– further (criminal iq)
the ponys– laced with romance (in the red). actually, i think the so sentimental 7″ was re-released by contaminated this year and i liked the first two 7″s better than the album but it’s still a fine album.
the black keys– rubber factory (fat possum). great record and an amazing band to see. pat’s drumming is understated yet extremely powerful.
I will humbly include the Bronx. Wish CSTB had stretched the list to 11 picks, just to see if Velvet Revolver was as close to the top as I suspect.
