From the LA Times’ Graeme L. Jones :

Ruud Gullit on Friday will add his name to the long list of prominent soccer coaches who have tried to make the sport fly in the United States when he is introduced as the new coach of the Los Angeles Galaxy.

The former Dutch soccer star and current television analyst, who will make his bow at a morning press conference at the Home Depot Center, has been charged by AEG, the team’s owner, with producing the sort of “sexy” soccer that will win back fans disillusioned by two years of the Galaxy’s poor play.

Although Major League Soccer does not reveal details of player and coach contracts, reports in Britain, where Gullit has been working for Sky Sports, suggested that he had signed a three-year contract worth an estimated $10 million.

Those who witnessed Gullit’s tenure as Newcastle manager are well aware there’s nothing sexier than benching Alan Shearer.
