“What Elvis Costello was to the Attractions, Francisco Cordero is to the Brewers,” exhulted ESPN’s John Buccigross earlier tonight, while showing highlights of Milwaukee’s 5-3 win over Houston. While it was neither the first time nor the last the “Sportscenter” anchor has made a similar analogy, this might’ve been the most confusing to date.
So beware, Francisco, because Buccigross is suggesting you’re a Bebe Buell-screwing autocrat who’d like to write a bassist teammate out of the history books. Wednesday morning might be a very good time to assure Tony Graffanino he’s still in line for a full playoff share.
Indie cred just doesn’t relate well to sports. Songwriter=Coach? Lead Vocalist=QB or starting pitcher? Backing vocals & percussion=Punter or pinch-hitter?
I’d give Butchie credit for hipping up the place by not name-checking Steely Dan like Chris Berman, but Elvis’s fastball left the building decades ago.
See. I proved my own point.
“indie cred just doesn’t relate well to sports”
what, pray tell, does “indie cred” have to do with anything? Unless Buccigross has knowledge of Cordero’s teammates being particularly disposable or the city of Milwaukee being full of ex-Stiv Bators paramours (perhaps the latter is more plausible), this was the least workable of the anchordude’s spiels to date.
“Elvis’s fastball left the building decades ago.”
I think your math’s as fucked as your musical taste. He’s only 5 years removed from ‘When I Was Cruel’.
I would argue Elvis Costello isn’t even a member of the Attractions.
I would also argue that Buccigross routinely mentions bands who are far, far, far worse than Steely Dan (or anything else in Chris Berman’s record collection for that matter).
You’re all missing the point: the EC reference is really about how he and Cordero have had some anger issues to overcome.. and whether its a chair being hurled at fans or racist comments about Ray Charles being hurled at Bonnie Raitt and Steven Stills, I dont approve of that kind of thing. And apparently, neither does John Buccigross.
“I would argue Elvis Costello isn’t even a member of the Attractions.”
well, exactly. When Buccigross says “what Elvis Costello was to the Attractions, Francisco Cordero is to the Brewers,†does he mean Cordero is the Brew Crew’s demanding and occasionally neglectful employer? Cause that makes no sense whatsoever.
Mike – apologies in advance if you were kidding, but I believe you meant Bonnie Bramlett. Of Delaney & Bonnie fame (the Delaney, of course, being Parker Delaney of A Certain General).
We’re well on our way to challenging the Huckapoo comment thread for CSTB’s lamest ever, gang. Keep it up!
That’s what struck me. Elvis wasn’t in the Attractions. Cordero’s a Brewer. And Steely Dan is the best American band, ever.
I actually won a bet with my Dad once, because he thought it was Bonnie Raitt, too, and I knew it was Bramlett. And he LOVES Delaney and Bonnie (Bramlett). I was 13 at the time. That wasn’t fun.
