WBC/WBA/IBF cruiserweight champion O™Neil Bell (26-1-1, 24 KOs) was booked Sunday on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, according to a statement by the San Bernardino County sheriff™s department, after a sparring partner, Larry Slayton, claimed Bell chased him through the woods brandishing a hatchet. Deputies were contacted regarding to a possible fight off Highway 38 in Big Bear and found Bell™s sparring partner running for his life through the brush, sheriff™s spokeswoman Arden Wiltshire said yesterday.

According to Slayton, Bell grew angry during a training session for the March 17 rematch with Jean-Marc Mormeck in Paris, and Bell threw a hatchet he was carrying for œprotection against bears”.

Stephen Colbert and Willie Alexander were each unavailable for comment.
