Thanks to Wojohowicz, who forwarded this incredibly crucial news item from Tip The Pizza Guy.com
I have worked in the pizza business in Deer Park, TX for about ten years and am currently employed with Pizza Hut. Deer Park is a suburb of Houston. Well, one of Deer Park’s residents is Major League Pitcher Andy Petit.
Mr. Petit orders at least once a month from us. I have delivered to his house a few times. Not once have I ever received more than a dollar tip from him or his wife. His pizzas have always been on time and correct. You think someone making millions of dollars a year would be a little more of a better tipper. I guess the world is full of cheapskates.
See? Even if Will Leitch retires from sports blogging, the the public’s-need-to-know shall always be paramount.
Is that all for your Leitch parting shot? Did he at least send you a goodbye email?
I like that even in his final moments at Deadspin — before leaving to take the job that seemingly all Gawker editors get when they bounce on Denton’s Misery Factory — Will didn’t drop the first-person plural. Hats off, hombre, and happy trails. Say what you will about Will (and as it pertains to Deadspin I’ll probably agree with it) but that site is not going to get any better with Big Daddy Balls (that’s his name, right, Buzz?) running the show.
Now he’s off to soil the rep of a legit publication. Knowing what I know of weeklies of that ilk, this chump is making some serious coin. I wish I could send one of those contrived letter to the editor ending with ‘cancel my subscription’ but I let my renewal lapse several years ago after they redesigned the frigging reviews section.
Knowing what I know of New York Magazine — which I’ll admit isn’t that much — he’s not making that much. It’s always seemed to me like there were hundreds of contributing editors there; my impression is that it’s like a Soviet bureaucracy. He’s not making six-figures just for handling the “how black, relatively speaking, is Kellen Winslow Jr.” beat. Making much better money than me, yes. But serious coin…Christ, I fucking hope not. And think not.
Dave,
I’m sorry. I’ll have more to add on Friday, but I had a dinner date with Nick Denton to get to.
Burnout issues aside, this was probably the right career move for our Will. Post-Buzz, he ran the risk of being ID’d first and foremost as “that guy with the Matt Leinart photos” (as opposed, to, say, the guy whose goofy ideas about race are usually glossed over). I always envisioned him ending up as one of the pundits on VH-1’s “Best Week Ever” but we’ve all learned that public speaking isn’t his strong suit.
From what I know of Denton’s blogs, it’s a real grind of multiple updates per day and a low paying gig, too (admittedly, my info is years old at this point). Whatever Leitch is doing for NEW YORK, it’ll be a lot easier and less work intensive than DEADSPIN. He’ll have editorial support, budget, and real press credential for access. And if the Buzz Bissinger’s of the world really want to call him out as writing bullshit, they’ll actually have to back up what they say.
